iPhone 3G features Posted on: 6-9-2008

Yes! The iPhone 3G is finally here! Today Mr Steve Jobs announced at the WWDC that starting July 11 we will be able to buy the second generation iPhone, complete with 3G, GPS, third party apps and alot of other neat features.
Changes were made on the exterior of the phone, on the back of it, to be precise. Probably because of the GPS module the new iPhone is a little thicker, yet, because of the rounded plastic back with slimmer edges, it seems slimmer than the old model. It's like some visitor said on engdget's comments: "The new iPhone will, somehow, be both larger and smaller than the current model!". The front of the device remains unchanged. Yup that means no front viewing camera for video calls
But the real changes were made on the inside:
- of course the first change that also gives the name of iPhone 3G is obviously the 3G. According to Apple the new iPhone loads pages up to 36% faster than the competing devices.
- another important feature is the GPS module with integration of Google maps. That means you can switch to satelite view and see your position, beside from the regular map view, something that you don't see in many GPS systems. And if that isn't enough TomTom, one of the leading GPS manufacturers already announced that they have a fully functional version of their software prepared for the iPhone 3G.
- it is natural that the second generation iPhone to come with the second generation firmware. And this firmware has a few neat features also: scientific calculator, contact search and other. We don't know about copy/paste, MMS or video recording, let's hope they'll be there on July 11.
- and the best new feature: Third party apps for the iPhone!!! A whole new world has opened, games, organisers, chat clients, emulators, text and picture editors, if you can think of it be sure someone out there is making it.
The new iPhone 3G comes in two flavours: a black model as you can see in the top picture that has 8Gb and a White one like in the next picture with 16Gb. Prices are $199 and $299. Yes they are smaller but you need to sign a contract with the operator when you buy the device so you have to consider this additional cost.
It will be available starting from July 11 and comes packed only with the headset and the wall charger/usb cable. No dock. But hey, it has a paperclip to help you open the sim tray!
